Make sure the bedding matches the sheets
Standard thread count on sheets, duvet covers, and comforters runs around 150.

This figure refers to the number of threads, both vertical and horizontal, in one square inch of fabric. So if you have 1,000-count sheets and a 150-count comforter, you're not getting half the comfort you deserve. That's like being, as Dan Rather so eloquently put it, a four-dollar gopher in a two dollar pelt. Get Down With Comfort Down comforters deliver comfort by combining what's on the inside with what's on the outside. The desirable qualities of down comforters are products of the down feather fill, which is generally comprised of duck and goose down. Down feathers are the fine, soft feathers that lie beneath the coarser exterior feathers. The ability of this natural material to pad and insulate is second to none. A down comforter's fabric quality is the next factor determining overall comfort. Thread count has little to do with warmth, but everything to do with feel and softness. Generally, the higher the thread count, the softer the fabric. This holds true for both cotton and cotton blends. Higher thread counts also produce a tighter fabric, which increases the fabric's ability to keep small pieces of feather securely packed inside. |

Down for the Count
Whether you really need 1,000-thread count linens for maximum comfort is a matter up for debate. Because manufacturers are able to twist threads in such a way to double the thread count without adding any real comfort or durability, high thread counts at low prices should be regarded with a degree of skepticism. With that in mind, industry experts agree that comforters with thread counts of at least 300 (twice the standard count) will provide an attractive combination of comfort and resiliency.
